Discover the History of the Old Town Hall

Step back in time and discover the fascinating history of Hemel's Old Town Hall with a guided tour. Built in the early 1850s, this iconic building dominates the High Street and tells a captivating story about the political, economic, and social ambitions of the people who lived here in the 1800s.

The Old Town Hall replaced a 17th-century market house, which was a direct result of a charter granted by Henry VIII in 1539. Designed by George Low in the elegant Jacobean style, the new building was a striking symbol of civic pride. The design involved a symmetrical main frontage with five bays facing the High Street, featuring a portico with Corinthian columns and a balcony. It was a bustling hub of commerce and administration, with a corn market and corn exchange, as well as an annual wool fair. The Butchers' Shambles and the weekly plait and annual job fairs were held nearby, making the area the vibrant heart of the town.

The Old Town Hall is more than just a building; it's a window into the past, revealing the aspirations and daily life of the community. Its walls hold stories of bustling markets, important civic meetings, and the everyday lives of the people who shaped Hemel into the town it is today. Join a tour and uncover the rich history behind this historic landmark. You won't be disappointed!
