Green Person

Green Person by Paul Wilson

Originally from Yorkshire, Paul has always loved art. His first memories as a child were drawing soldiers from his Dad’s military photographs and sketching his Hornby train set.

The biggest drawback however, was his acute colour blindness. This proved embarrassing when an O level examiner remarked how lifelike his self portrait in oils was, adding with a little incredulity “But why do you see yourself as a green person?”

From then on Paul decided to stick to cartoons and caricatures, then eventually experimenting with brush and black ink. Indeed a brush and ink painting of the famous fourth hole at Musselburgh Old Course now hangs in their historic clubhouse.

Being in the catering profession which took him from Cumbria to London, Canada, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar, he eventually settled in Hertfordshire. With such a busy lifestyle, art took a back seat for many years until a visit to Venice in late 2019 inspired him to pick up his brushes again. In 2020 Covid hit and he was put on furlough. Having an excess of time on his hands he took the plunge and and began painting with acrylic paint and ink. His first subject was the Grand Canal in Venice at dusk and continued painting scenes from his walks along the Grand Union Canal.

After receiving favourable reviews of his work on social media he started producing scenes from around Herts Beds and Bucks and joined the Berkhamsted Art Society.

Now in semi retirement he can develop and devote more time to his passion where commissions are welcome.
