About Abi Farrell: Stories Behind the Songs
An intimate evening of acoustic music with Oxford-raised, London-based singer, songwriter, and soul artist Abi Farrell. Abi will be performing a collection of her own music past, present and unreleased, alongside some hand-crafted arrangements of the songs that have inspired her.
Abi Farrell - Artist Biography
Abi Farrell was raised in Oxfordshire on a soundtrack spanning the likes of Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Candi Staton, and Carole King. Whilst these influences can be found in her music, Abi’s songwriting and vocal delivery is also heavily influenced by her early (and enduring) love for the vocal powerhouses of contemporary pop music. After cutting her teeth in soul bands, big bands, and vocal groups whilst a History student at the University of Birmingham, Abi moved to London in 2017 and released her debut EP in 2019. Today, her music has been championed by the likes of Craig Charles who has praised Abi's sound as 'proper soul for the 21st century'.
Abi is known for her effortlessly pure voice and lyrical dexterity, which are equally at home creating both moving, soul-stirring ballads (See ‘Nobody Else’; The Only Way I Learn) and high-energy anthems (‘Empowered’, ‘New Love’, ‘47 Days’, ‘Never Be’.)
Abi’s songwriting has a modern pop sensibility and an appeal to all generations, exploring themes of identity, self-esteem, empowerment, gender equality, mental health, and social mobility. She is best known by many for her releases with Big AC Records (Nick Corbin, Sophie Heath) including tracks 'I Will See You Through', 'Empowered', 'Don't Follow Me' and 'Stepping Out Of Your Shadow', all produced by long-term collaborator Mitch Ayling (The Milk).
Named 'an artist on the rise' by Blues & Soul Magazine, her music has garnered rave reviews from the UK & international soul scene - ‘Don't Follow Me', a social commentary on misogyny, was premiered by Robert Elms on BBC Radio London and performed live in session on BBC Radio 4's Loose Ends.
Abi has opened stages for Izo Fitzroy, Dee C Lee, Michelle David & the True-Tones and Stone Foundation, has headlined the BBC Introducing stage at Oxfordshire's The Big Feastival, and has sold out multiple venues across the UK to date.
2025 sees the release of new singles '47 Days' and 'Never Be', produced by Sheffield-based producer, musician, and songwriter Nick Atkinson who is known for his work with Kat Eaton, Ruby Turner, and Laura Evans. Abi is currently writing her highly-anticipated debut album.
