News :Ricky Gervais unveils new statue
News Story

A statue honouring Antilly, the canine star of Netflix’s acclaimed series, After Life, has been unveiled in Hemel Old Town.
Vislor Antilly — a German Shepherd affectionately known as Anti — played Brandy, the loyal companion of Tony, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. Anti passed away earlier this year, and Netflix and CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) chose Hemel Hempstead Old Town as the site for a permanent tribute. The statue now stands beside the After Life bench, previously donated by Netflix, in St Mary’s Close.
Earlier this month, renowned animal lover, Ricky Gervais visited The Old Town Hall, where he made a short film and spoke movingly about his memories of his favourite co-star and the reasons behind the statue. Ricky said:
It’s an idea that Netflix had to pay tribute to their animal stars, and I think Anti might be the best animal star of all time. So you can all come along and touch her cold nose for luck – she really is beautiful – and come and say hello good girl, still a good girl.
All three series featured Hemel’s Old Town, including the office of the Tambury Gazette, where Tony worked, at 48 High Street. The High Street served as a backdrop for many scenes and several of the Old Town’s businesses starred in the production.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Sally Symington said:
I am delighted that Netflix has chosen Hemel Old Town as the home for Anti’s statue, which sits beautifully in St Mary’s Close beside the After Life bench. The Old Town featured in many scenes and continues to draw film productions, thanks to its fantastic location, historic buildings and nearby attractions. The statue is a wonderful legacy and we hope it will give joy and attract fans — and dog lovers — to our Old Town for many years to come.
